Choose Soapstone for Your Kitchen Countertop

Are you planning to renovate your kitchen countertops? At Rock Solid Marble and Granite, we install soapstone countertops. If you like light veining of marble or dark beauty of granite, consider soapstone. It is a natural stone material that has been used for centuries in countertops. Sleek but hardy soapstone countertops are designed to take a beating with relatively low-maintenance, with a lovely, old-world feel.

Soapstone is a New England favorite and traditional use of this material was the laboratory tabletop in chemistry labs. It’s a great surface to work with as it functional and resistant to scratches or burns. Acidic food and win won’t etch soapstone as they will other stone surfaces.

Soapstone like any other natural stone is quarried and is mostly composed of mineral talc, which makes it quite soft, but with a higher proportion of quartz in it, makes it more appropriate to a kitchen surface. Color ranges from light grey to dark charcoal as well as green / blue hue.

Mineral oil treatment or usage of wax coat will enhance the natural darkening process of soapstone and ensures it darken evenly. Apply periodical coats of mineral oil to the stone until it develops a natural patina. We also fabricate custom soapstone undermount and farm sinks from the same slab used for your countertops to provide a perfect match.
